Leviticus 6:13 commands that the fire on the altar must burn continuously and never be extinguished. This instruction appears within broader regulations governing the burnt offering—part of the priestly duties established in the Levitical law.
The perpetual fire outside the tabernacle was never to be allowed to go out, with this requirement emphasized three times in Leviticus 6 (verses 9, 12, and 13).
Each morning the priest would add fresh wood to maintain the flame, then arrange the burnt offering and fat portions upon it. (Lev 6:8–13) The priest performed these duties in linen garments, then removed his vestments and carried the ashes outside the camp to a clean place. (Lev 6:8–13)
The theological significance of this unending fire operated on multiple levels. God Himself initiated the altar fire—it came directly from His presence and consumed the initial burnt offering, prompting the people to shout for joy and fall prostrate. This perpetual flame served as a constant reminder of God’s power. Beyond divine power, the fire represented God’s presence itself—the Shekinah glory visible in the flames—continuously reminding Israel that salvation belonged to the Lord alone.
The unquenched fire functioned as an emblem of God’s perpetual work on behalf of humanity. Like the burning bush Moses encountered, which required no fuel to sustain its flames, God’s love toward Israel and humanity demands no external sustenance—it burns through the ages regardless of indifference, neglect, or rejection. The sacred fire endured throughout Israel’s wilderness wanderings and continued through tabernacle worship until Solomon’s temple was built, when God once again ignited the altar fire at the dedication.
